Planner's Comments

This was my first
experience of planning using OCAD and I must say that it was a happy one – the
armchair stage of the planning is much easier than the ‘old days’ when it
involved a pinboard, map pins and lengths of cotton to
measure course lengths! Planning the
shorter and less technical courses is always a challenge on areas like Hayle and Penhale but the only
two courses which appear to have been either too long or too technical were
Orange and Light Green, where the times were a fair bit outside the
guidelines. I apologise for the delay to
the start times but on this area, with its high level of public access it’s too
risky to put out controls before the day of the event and as it wasn’t light
until after 7.00 am I had a very narrow time frame in which to place all of the
controls. My thanks to
Roger for his guidance and his assistance with getting to grips with OCAD and
to all those who helped to bring in the controls at the end of the day.
Controller's Comments – Roger Hargreaves
"In an ideal world the controller should have had a bit
more time to give advice about the event than we had available to us on this
occasion. It would have allowed us time to look at the map more
critically and with a bit of Google Earth input there could have been a more
extensive map update than we were able to do. I was confident that the
senior courses would be fine taking in the full extent of the map. Some
control sites had to be reviewed due to inaccurate map or vulnerability to interference.
The delay to the start was unfortunate but all the controls were put out and
checked in the morning and so we were about 20 minutes overdue on what was
anticipated.
I was concerned about the difficulty of the Yellow, Orange and Light Green courses
but despite one or two comments at the download tent everyone survived the day;
well done to you all.
The organisation of the event had to be flexible as Adele came out of hospital
on the Saturday before the event and Phil and Elsie took on many of the roles
of the Organiser. Thanks to Barry and Pauline for the SI set up and all
the helpers and control collectors who make the whole day come together.
There were a number of independents having a go today and judging by the
results we'd like you to think about joining the club!
footnote - the event only
ends when everything gets back into the proper place - well not yet as there
are tasks still to do - one tent is mended whilst the other one is being
cleaned and disinfected from dog poo before being
returned to the store; and Barry gets all the results and Routegadget
onto the website"
