Planner's Comments

Even
though I knew the Polly Joke area well I was very apprehensive about the
planning process mainly because I would have to get to grips with the course
setting software and the SI punching system. However, all of my concerns were
dealt with very swiftly
by the club experts. Graham Pring provided the initial guidance
on the planners responsibilities whilst Barry Olds and Roger and Elsie
Hargreaves provided expert advice on managing the mapping software and Phil Newall arranged the printing of a maps
from the a file sent over the internet. Indeed, I believe anyone in the club
with access to the internet, a PC and the Kerno
experts would be surprised how simple the planning administration tasks have
now become.
The
courses seemed well received by almost all competitors – I tried to make the
most of the more technical dune area on the longer courses with those on the
Brown visiting the area twice. Following the wet summer the vegetation on the
normally very fast open areas had grown significantly making the courses more
physically demanding.
My thanks
go to Alan Middleton, the controller for his guidance and advice during the
planning and his invaluable help in the stetting out and checking of the
controls. Thanks also to the team that helped collect the controls – it was very
appreciated at the end of a long day!

The
key to success is to have enough time to prepare.
Chris
provided the courses in plenty of time, and we were able to visit the sites and
agree on the format so that with almost 3 weeks to go we were virtually ready
to go to print. A lesson for all there I think.
The
courses made excellent use of the available map and in particular the dunes
were used to the full, causing some I heard to have concern about climb and
length. However the finish times would vindicate the planning and I was pleased
to here almost universal praise for the planning at the finish.
The
map remains good but could do with some attention to the thickets.

Organiser's Comments – Elsie Hargreaves
Thanks to Treago Farm for letting us use their camp site; we had a well placed parking field
and the use of a very comfortable toilet bock. The weather stayed dry
albeit windy and I must thank all the willing helpers. Everything on the
organising side went very well. I didn't venture out due to a dodgy hip
but I was regaled with tales of energy sapping marram
grass, the lack of rabbits or sleep!
