Planner's Comments – Bernard Pullen

This was the second consecutive year that I have planned the Lanhydrock event and it became almost impossible to find something different as most of you have run here on many occasions.  This year I reduced the length and climb of the courses under close scrutiny and constructive advice from Dick and, having had a quick look at the results we were not too far from the BOF guidelines.

While I was touring Lanhydrock during the planning stages I found several control sites with tape from previous years which should have been removed when collecting controls back in.  I think this is something that all planners, including myself, should be aware of.

Having the event on probably the best weekend weather wise we could have wished for it certainly helped to make it a very enjoyable day (hopefully) for all those who took part.

The organisation was excellent, thanks to Ransom family who did a first class job.  I would like to thank Dick, who was the Controller for the event, for not only his help and overall guidance but for previous help with the OCAD system, which I feel at last I am beginning to understand.

Finally I would like to thank all who helped with the collecting of the controls, Barry and Pauline for their continued work on every event we hold and Ruth for her patience.

Controller's Comments – Dick Smith

General

I’d like to echo Bernard’s comments and also thank him for all his (and Ruth’s) hard work. The ‘R’ team’s organisation was slick, despite having problems finding helpers. Barry starred, as always, with SI and the computer and Pauline ‘gave up her run’ to encourage/supervise some of the youngsters and get them to do a second course. All are a pleasure to work with. Bernard’s friend Colin deserves a mention for all his help putting out controls on the Saturday.

Estimates of the numbers of maps needed were about right though perhaps future events might like to have more Yellow/Orange/Lt Green for second-coursers. Blank maps might also be useful as a back up.

Map

Before the next FL event here, the following could do with attention - north re-aligning/checking, runnability screen revising, knolls and rootstocks checking and the many parkland alterations put onto the map. One of the wooden fences was removed only a few days before the event. There are some well-mapped, rarely-visited areas in the north and south which are worthy of use before they are completely overgrown, even though only the longer courses would visit them.

Courses/results

White and Yellow suffered from the lack of a suitable path network and so mainly followed fences with the liberal use of smileys and taped routes. This seemed to work well and justified the effort required although they weren’t very ‘pushchair friendly’. Some of the parkland legs on the less technical courses caused problems for those who didn’t orientate the map properly. On Blue and Brown, 235 and 236, south of the river were challenging for some but not for others. Splits for the parkland legs were close. AM’s 2nd place on Green show how accurate you can be when walking – fast.

I was keen that Bernard kept lengths (including height allowance) close to the guidelines. This he did and the spread of times is about what I expected. Can I recommend Route Gadget on the KERNO web site to you? It’s good to see what others have done and optimum routes aren’t always obvious, even after the event. Thanks for coming.

Organiser's Comments – Chris Ranson

Well what a fantastic day! The sun shone, the courses worked well.  I had a great band of helpers.  Thank you very much to you all.  We had a very good turnout of competitors, despite several regulars trying out their skills elsewhere on the ski slopes.  My thanks to Bernard Pullen for planning and doing a brilliant job.  Also to Dick Smith for controlling and equally doing it well.  I would like to thank Jamie, our eldest son, who unexpectedly arrived for the weekend, and being an old hand at organising was a great help.  It was also encouraging to see several groups of newcomers 'having a go' at orienteering for the first time.
